The Part of Me That Kept Taking Notes

I keep sitting with the space between knowing and admitting. They are not the same thing. Knowing can live in the body for a long time before the mouth is willing to give it a name. It can sit in the shoulders. In the stomach. In the strange exhaustion that follows a conversation you keep insisting was fine. Writing Becoming Me stirred that space for me. The Feeler opens. She wants warmth to mean safety. She wants attention to mean care. She is not foolish for that. I needed to be gentle with her because openness is not the crime people sometimes make it out to be. Then there is the Watcher. She notices what does not match. She remembers the sentence that changed later. She hears the small diminishment hidden inside the joke. She keeps taking notes while the Feeler keeps hoping. I think many of us carry both voices. One says, maybe they meant well. The other says, but this still hurts. For a long time, we may treat those voices as enemies. We decide one is too emotional and the other is too suspicious. We try to pick the version of ourselves that will make love easier to keep. But what if becoming whole is not about choosing one? What if the heart is allowed to love and the eyes are allowed to stay open? That is what I am sitting with. The idea that discernment does not have to harden us. It does not have to turn every new person into a threat or every tender feeling into a mistake. It can simply mean that we stop asking our softness to survive without protection. I want readers to know that the body is not always making an accusation. Sometimes it is asking a question. Sometimes it is saying, please look again. Please notice the pattern. Please stop calling this peace when we are always bracing. And I want them to know there is no shame in how long it takes. The truth can be clear and still be difficult to choose. Leaving an explanation behind can feel like leaving hope behind, too. That grief is real. Still, there is something beautiful about the moment your inner voices stop arguing and begin protecting each other. The Feeler says, I do not want to stop loving. The Watcher says, you do not have to. We are just going to stop leaving ourselves out of it. Maybe that is where return begins.
