The Part of Me That Wants Two Things

I keep thinking about how quickly we ask people to become one thing. Certain or uncertain. Soft or guarded. Ready or not ready. In love or gone. Pick one, we say, because your contradiction is making me nervous. Writing around the heart of GEMINI LOVE LANGUAGE stirred up the part of me that understands why one answer is not always enough. Not because I think confusion should be romanticized. I don't. Confusion can be cruel when it is used to keep somebody waiting. But sometimes what looks like confusion is just a person brave enough to admit that two truths are alive at once. I can love you and need silence. I can know who I am and still be becoming her. I can want closeness, then feel myself reaching for air when closeness starts asking me to explain every room inside me. That's the messy part. The part we don't put on greeting cards because “I adore you, please give me twenty minutes to disappear into my own head” doesn't fit neatly under the flowers. But I think love needs room for that honesty. What I am sitting with now is the responsibility inside duality. Having two sides does not mean I get to hand somebody a puzzle with missing pieces and call their frustration a lack of patience. If I need space, I have to say what that means. If my feelings change, I have to own the change. If I care, my care cannot live only in beautiful words. It has to become something another person can actually feel. And on the other side, understanding me should never require someone to abandon themselves. That sentence matters to me. There is a difference between being seen in all your complexity and being excused from accountability because you are complicated. I want readers to know they are allowed to hold both compassion and boundaries. You can understand why someone pulls away and still decide the pulling hurts too much. You can recognize their fear without building your home inside it. Maybe that is what I wanted to get closer to with this book. Not a neat explanation of a Gemini heart. Not a label that solves love. Just a language for the push and pull. A place where contradiction can tell the truth without becoming an alibi. Some of us feel everything twice. We still have to love with both eyes open.
