The Parts We Hide to Keep the Peace

I keep sitting with the difference between being private and being hidden. They can look so much alike from the outside. Both are quiet. Both keep certain things away from other people's hands. But one feels like protection, and the other feels like slowly leaving yourself behind. Writing around the heart of VEIL OF SECRETS stirred that up for me. Not only the obvious kind of power, the mystical kind, but the ordinary power we bury every day. A clear no. A trusted instinct. The part of us that knows when something is wrong before we can explain why. I think a lot of us were taught to call that part difficult. Too sensitive. Too much. Too intense. Too imaginative. There always seems to be a softer word for the same command: make yourself smaller so nobody else has to examine their discomfort. And sometimes we do. Not because we are weak, but because belonging matters. Safety matters. Being loved matters. We learn the shape people will accept, and then we spend years holding that shape even after it begins to hurt. What I am sitting with now is how reclamation rarely looks as beautiful as we want it to. It can be awkward. It can sound like a shaky voice saying no. It can feel like guilt after setting a perfectly reasonable boundary. It can be realizing that the peace you kept was never peaceful for you. There is grief in that. There is also freedom. I want readers to know that becoming whole does not mean becoming fearless. It does not mean you wake up one morning untouched by shame, certain of every choice, glowing with magical confidence. Sometimes it means you hear the old warning in your head and choose yourself anyway. Quietly. Imperfectly. Maybe with your hands trembling. I am not interested in a version of power that never doubts. I am interested in the moment doubt is present, but no longer in charge. The moment a woman looks at everything she was told to bury and wonders whether it was dangerous only because it was hers. That is the question beneath the shadows for me. What if the thing we were taught to fear within ourselves is not the ending? What if it is the way back?
