The Things We Mean and the Things They Hear

I keep thinking about how often we say one thing while quietly hoping someone hears another. “I need space” can mean please do not leave me while I find myself again. “I’m fine” can mean I do not know if my feelings are safe here yet. And sometimes silence is not a lack of love. Sometimes it is a room full of words fighting over who gets to come out first. Writing around the heart of GEMINI LOVE LANGUAGE stirred that up for me. Not because I believe love should always be difficult or mysterious. I do not. Confusion is not chemistry just because it keeps you awake at night. But I do believe people can hold opposite truths without one of them being false. I can want to be known and still protect the tender parts of me. I can crave closeness and need enough room to hear my own thoughts. I can forgive someone and decide they no longer get access to me. Apparently healing has no interest in being neat. Rude, honestly. What I am sitting with now is the difference between being complex and being careless. Complexity says, “There are two feelings here, and I want to understand both.” Carelessness says, “This is just who I am,” then leaves everyone else to clean up the emotional mess. I never want duality to become an excuse for harm. I want it to become an invitation into deeper honesty. Tell me the two truths. Tell me you miss me and you are still angry. Tell me you love me and cannot keep losing yourself to prove it. Tell me your heart changed its mind halfway through the sentence. Just tell me cleanly. That is what writing this has reminded me. Translation only works when both people are willing to speak. One person cannot keep studying every pause, every shift in tone, every almost-confession, then call that intimacy. I want readers to know they are not too complicated because their feelings arrive in pairs. You do not have to cut yourself in half to become easier to love. But you do owe yourself honesty about whether a connection is making room for all of you, or only the parts that are convenient. I am learning to let both truths exist. The love was real. And I still deserve a language that does not leave me guessing.
