The Things We Mean but Do Not Know How to Say
I have been sitting with the difference between being complicated and being unclear.
They are not the same thing, even though I think a lot of us learned to treat them that way. Complicated sounds like a warning. Like too much work. Like a person should arrive already sorted, labeled, and easy to hold.
But feelings do not behave like that.
Writing around the heart of GEMINI LOVE LANGUAGE stirred up the question of what it means to feel everything twice. To want closeness and freedom. To crave conversation, then need silence. To be certain about love and uncertain about what love is asking you to become.
I do not think contradiction always means dishonesty. Sometimes it means the truth changed shape before we found the words for it.
Still, I keep coming back to responsibility.
I can be layered without making somebody else solve me. I can need room without disappearing. I can change my mind without rewriting what happened. I can ask to be understood while also doing the uncomfortable work of making myself understandable.
That last part is the one that stays with me.
Because it is easy to romanticize being misunderstood. There is something almost beautiful about imagining yourself as the mystery nobody could hold. But mystery stops feeling beautiful when another heart is standing there, exhausted, trying to figure out whether your silence means fear, anger, distance, or goodbye.
I wanted the emotional world around this book to make room for both sides. The person saying, “Please understand that I feel more than one thing.” And the person answering, “Please understand that I cannot keep guessing which feeling will meet me today.”
Neither one has to be the villain.
But both have to tell the truth.
What I want readers to know is that having two truths inside you does not make you impossible to love. It makes you human. The work is learning how to let those truths sit beside each other without using either one as an excuse to hurt someone.
I am still sitting with that. How love can be real and still need translation. How understanding can be generous without becoming self-abandonment. How clarity is not the enemy of mystery.
Maybe the language of love is not something we magically know.
Maybe it is something two people build, word by honest word.
